Statement of Intent -- One Shot Event

1.     What is the story--the beginning, middle, and end--of this scene in three or four sentences? In other words, what happens in this scene as it starts, as it progresses, and as it ends?
Two people are in a bowling alley.  They each take their turns bowling and trying to beat the other.  There is probably some flirting, as they are a couple.  One of them either does something really amazing, or does something really stupid.  We will see how the game turns out.

2.     What, specifically, must the audience understand narratively? How do you intend to communicate that information?
They need to understand that the two people bowling are a couple – and a new one at that – and that this game is something fun for them and not something to be taken super seriously.

3.     If this scene is from a longer piece, what is the narrative, emotional and thematic purpose of the scene in the larger story?
Thematically, I want it to convey a sense of joy and happiness that can be found in another person.  The thing is not about bowling at all—it’s about being with someone you enjoy.

4.     What emotion do you want to communicate in this scene? How do you intend to do this?
I want to communicate happiness with this scene.  I intend to do this by trying to capture genuine moments between the two people bowling.  Probably with close ups.

5.     What is the first image of the scene? What is the final image of the scene?
The first image of the scene will be a close up on one of their faces (whoever isn’t bowling), and the last image will hopefully be of the two together.

6.     Why is this scene personal to me? What previous personal experience(s) does it remind me of? Why do I need to make this scene?
This scene is personal to me because human romantic relationships are really important to me and it’s also something I’ve never really had a good grasp on.  I think the nice, flirtatious, care-free new love though is so sweet and unique and fleeting that it might be a nice thing to capture and watch.

7.     What two visual elements (line, shape, space, tone, color, rhythm, movement) will you use to help communicate the emotion of the scene? (Be sure these elements apply to the assignment as listed on Learning Suite; only choose elements that you have read about or that we have covered in class.)
I will definitely be using deep space, as the lines that exist in the bowling alley will be cool to play with.  I will try and capture the brightness of the bowling alley to add to the light-hearted mood of the scene.

8.     What are two or three potential obstacles to creating a successful scene? How can you be prepared to overcome these? Be specific!

I think noise is the biggest issue right now.  Bowling alleys are loud and I won’t have a boom operator or control over the noise at all, so it might be distracting and annoying to listen to in the final product.  Another obstacle is an obvious one: not knowing exactly what will happen.  I fear I might get boring footage or that things won’t go as I hoped they would and I end up with a totally different project than the one I set out to make.  I guess the only way to overcome that is to go with the flow and be able to adapt to what I get.
